What are the advantages of plate heat exchangers? The main reason for their popularity is their ease of cleaning, light weight, small footprint, and low price, making them favored in many industries. Let's take a closer look.
Easy Cleaning: After removing the tightening plates of the plate heat exchanger, the plate pack can be loosened, and the plates removed for mechanical cleaning.
Easy Modification of Heat Transfer Area or Flow Arrangement: Simply adding (or removing) plates achieves the required increase (or decrease) in heat transfer area.
Lightweight: The plate thickness of a plate heat exchanger is only 0.6~0.8mm, while the heat transfer tube thickness of a shell and tube heat exchanger is 2.0~2.5mm; the shell of a shell and tube heat exchanger is much heavier than the structure of a plate heat exchanger. For the same heat transfer task, the plate heat exchanger requires a smaller heat transfer area than the shell and tube heat exchanger.
Small Footprint: Plate heat exchangers have a compact structure, with a heat transfer area 2~5 times that of shell and tube heat exchangers per unit volume. They also do not require the space for tube extraction maintenance as shell and tube heat exchangers do. Therefore, for the same heat transfer task, the floor space of a plate heat exchanger is about 1/5~1/10 that of a shell and tube heat exchanger.
High Heat Transfer Coefficient: The structure of a shell and tube heat exchanger is excellent in terms of strength, but not ideal from a heat transfer perspective, as there are bypasses between the baffle plates—shell, baffle plates—heat transfer tubes, and tubes—shell when the fluid flows in the shell side. The fluid passing through these bypasses does not fully participate in the heat transfer. In a plate heat exchanger, there are no bypasses, and the corrugations of the plates cause turbulent flow at lower flow rates. Therefore, plate heat exchangers have a higher heat transfer coefficient, typically 3~5 times that of shell and tube heat exchangers.
Affordable Price: Given the same materials used, the structure requires less material, resulting in lower production costs than shell and tube heat exchangers.
